Netflix has been coming under sustained fire for the sheer volume of fantasy shows it cancels on an alarmingly regular basis, which has allowed Prime Video to swoop in and try and steal some positive headlines for itself after guaranteeing spiritual bedfellows The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time weren’t going anywhere.
It’s been a hell of a wait in the case of the latter, though, with the first run of episodes dropping all the way back in November of 2021. However, the good news is that second and third seasons were confirmed shortly after, so there was no need for those won over by the richly-detailed world to fret about the axe looming overhead.
On the other side of the coin, a two-year gap is becoming the frustrating norm in the world of streaming, but at the very least there’s a date to be marked in calendars after Prime Video confirmed at long that season 2 of The Wheel of Time will premiere on September 1 of this year.
The Aes Sedai will be back with a vengeance, then, while the company is allowed to be a little smug in regards to one of its most heated rivals by blissfully celebrating the fact there are at least two more seasons to come, if not even more depending on how the next pair fare among audiences.
While The Wheel of Time wasn’t quite a global phenomenon on the same scale as the genre’s biggest smash hits, it seized the attention of old and new fans alike, and there’s a distinct chance the lengthy gap has allowed even more subscribers to get invested in the universe and its admittedly-dense mythology, theoretically opening season 2 up to fare even better than its predecessor.
