Back at the house, Malcolm takes down a map. He tells Vanessa that she was right in saying he’d never go to Africa. He tells her that they should get a Christmas tree, and she smiles, saying they could have “the boys” come over to decorate. He smiles at that and breaks down in tears, embracing Vanessa – now not as a mere partner, but as the only daughter he has left. They’re an odd couple to be sure, but both of them are bound together by their love for Mina and by the guilt they feel towards one another. It’s far from a model family, but for now, it’ll do.
In his laboratory, Victor slides on his work gloves as Caliban watches, terrified. Watching his creation, Victor pulls the cover off a table to reveal Brona. Caliban is overjoyed and struck by her beauty as Victor gravely sets to work. One bride of Frankenstein, coming right up.
Ethan returns to the bar, where his hunters are waiting for him. “Fun’s over,” one of them says. “You think so?” Ethan growls, his voice testy. “You going to make us chain you up like a monkey?” One asks, and the other echoes him. Ethan appears to be in some sort of agony, and he grips the edge of the bar, bending over. “We’ve got us a monkey here,” one says, kicking the chair. The other watches as Ethan’s knuckle shifts under its skin. Now they’ve done it. Ethan roars – an inhuman sound – and looks up to reveal a drastically transformed face (very similar to that of the Wolfman! Congratulations to those readers who pegged Ethan as some sort of werewolf early on). He attacks, sending blood sprays across the bar. The men scream as he rips them (and anyone else in the bar) to pieces. That would be a terrifically scary and fun note to end the season on, but Penny Dreadful has one more scene.
Vanessa walks into a church and hears children singing. She walks up to the priest and asks for private counsel. When they’re alone, she tells him she fears “those things of which I am capable, of which I have proven myself capable.” She asks the priest for an exorcism. Quietly, he tells her of a boy back in his home country of Wales who had an exorcism performed. “He died, they all died,” he says. No one found God. Before they proceed, he tells her to answer him one question. “If you are touched by the demon, it is like you are touched by the back hand of God, he says. “Makes you sacred in a way, makes you unique, there’s a kind of glory, the glory of suffering, even.” Point blank, he asks her, “Do you really want to be normal?” Vanessa broods for a minute and clears her throat to answer… and the episode cuts to black.
