Speaking of swooping in, IGN also asked Cosnett about his character’s future. From the sound of his interview thus far, it appears that we’ll get the same sort of relationship between Barry and Eddie that we saw in Smallville’s portrayal of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor: polar opposites who strike up an unexpected friendship, one that’s ultimately destined to turn them into mortal enemies.
In the extended trailer for The Flash, we saw that Barry’s mother was killed by a burst of yellow and red lightning, an obvious nod to the Professor Zoom costume. Is Eddie the one in the suit? Is it a future version of Professor Zoom, or perhaps something completely unexpected? Cosnett doesn’t give a concrete answer to his character’s future, but does drop a few hints:
“I hope to do the fans proud on this one, because, there’s going to be a lot of surprises coming up. [Laughs] I’m trying to dance around your question, because I want people to be surprised. But, inevitably, i know they’re going to be, because Geoff Johns is writing for the show, so he kind of gets full reign on what to do, so I think fans are going to be really shocked, surprised, and delighted on what’s going to happen.”
“This whole show’s about believing in the impossible, and believing in yourself so, it’s going to be wicked. I cant’ wait to find out what happens with Eddie.”
For those unfamiliar with the writer, Johns actually gave Professor Zoom a big revamp in 2009’s The Flash: Rebirth comic book series, which re-imagined the character as a major villain the DC Universe. In that series, Zoom causes Barry’s mother’s death. So, if Johns really has “full reign” over the series, expect some of those story elements to come into play.
