It looked like Netflix’s hit political drama House of Cards was to come to a premature end when its star Kevin Spacey became embroiled in one of the most high-profile and expansive sexual harassment scandals of recent times. However, it was ultimately decided that the series would be brought back for one final season, this time with Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood claiming the top spot from her husband Frank.
We’ve now learned that not only is Wright taking charge in front of the camera, but she also led the movement behind the scenes to get a sixth season off the ground when House of Cards’ future was called into question. Actress Patricia Clarkson – who joined the cast of the show last season – revealed what Wright did while speaking on CBS’ The Talk recently.
“Robin led all of this charge so that people would save their livelihoods, because when the show goes away, some people don’t get paid.”
Clarkson then went on to praise House of Cards‘ showrunners for how hard they worked to turn the narrative around and rebuild it with Wright’s character at the center. The actress seems to be pleased with how things went down, too, describing the upcoming season 6 as “stunning” and saying that she’s thankful that the cast and crew got the chance to make it.
“We have beautiful showrunners, Frank [Pugliese] and Melissa [Gibson], and they killed themselves to rethink the whole show. It’s only eight episodes. … I think it’s going to be a stunning, stunning new season and I’m thankful for it.”
Alongside Wright, Clarkson and the rest of the supporting cast, House of Cards season 6 will be filled out by some great new talent including a brace of Academy Award nominees in the form of Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear.
