Sarah Michelle Gellar Won’t Be Involved In Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

Sarah Michelle Gellar, former undead queen, has sadly poured ice-cold water over a potential reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was, without question, a cult gem of the 1990s.

It was a female-fronted drama with bite, and good enough to spawn multiple spinoff series involving Angel and his bloodthirsty companions. Suffice it to say, the Buffyverse was something truly special, so it’s small wonder why a pocket of superfans are keeping their fingers crossed in the hope of a rebooted edition of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Those prayers to the TV gods were answered when Fox 21 TV Studios and series creator Joss Whedon announced plans to revisit the story of Buffy Summers. But if and when that small-screen show sees the warm light of day, Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t be involved, after the fan-favorite actress revealed to TheWrap that she currently has no intentions of revisiting the role that propelled her into the stratosphere.

I don’t know anything about it, honestly. I think that it’s a great story and I’m glad that it will get retold and hope that people will watch it. But, you know, I’ve told my story with it. For me the beauty of the show was the madness and horrors of high school manifesting in actual literal horrors. And I may look young, thanks to all my Olay products, but I don’t look like I’m a kid.

And that’s that, sadly. A Buffy series without Gellar may sound like an Iron Man movie without Tony Stark, but providing Joss Whedon and writer-showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen take things in a different direction, fans ought to be pretty excited about Buffy 2.0.

Here’s the elevator pitch:

The new version will be contemporary, building on the mythology of the original. Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.

We’ll have more news on Fox’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series as additional information comes to light, but for now, you can let us know your own thoughts on Gellar’s involvement – or lack thereof – down below.
