Secret Invasion will be beaming itself into Disney Plus queues in less than a week, and even if critics are only somewhat convinced by the Nick Fury solo series right now, we’re all but ready to gobble this one up as it dares to depart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe ethos like never before.
The series will unite players old and new as Nick Fury assembles a posse consisting of himself, Talos, Maria Hill, and Everett K. Ross as they try to undermine a hostile sect of Skrulls led by Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik; a cunning terrorist who boasts a few more talents than the average Skrull.
Along with Ben-Adir’s Gravik, Secret Invasion will introduce the likes of Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth, a high-ranking MI6 agent and frenemy of Fury with respect to his war against the Skrulls, and G’iah, the now-grown daughter of Talos who holds something of a grudge against her father and Fury.
G’iah is played by Game of Thrones veteran Emilia Clarke, whose debut in the MCU has been a high-profile talking point for some time now, and according to Clarke’s onscreen dad Ben Mendelsohn, we’re right to be excited; in an interview with ComicBook, the Talos actor heaped mounds of praise on Clarke and what’s apparently a markedly meaty performance.
“One of the great gifts, for me on this was having this fabulous person and fabulous actor come in and inhabit Talos’ daughter, and just be able to bring that whole dimension to it. There is an invasion in the show, right? It is a secret. That’s the other part of it. But getting to deal with the rifts, the fault lines of that invasion, we get to explore different starts to that. But this gangster here.”
Anyone familiar with the actress shouldn’t be surprised that she seems to be serving just as well in the sci-fi world as she does in fantasy ones, but we can’t help but wonder exactly how deep her character will go. Where exactly is G’iah, the estranged daughter of one of the show’s protagonist, ultimately going to fall in this web of gray intentions?
The first episode of Secret Invasion will release to Disney Plus on June 21, with additional episodes releasing on a weekly basis until the show’s conclusion on July 26.
