BBC’s Sherlock is a huge hit, and though its popularity is much greater in the UK than here in North America, it is a must-watch show no matter where you’re located. It’s a brilliant re-imagining of literary’s most famous detective and it’s hands down one of the best shows that is currently on television.
The show’s second season aired over a year ago in the UK (10 months ago in the US) and left viewers with a MAJOR cliffhanger. Since then, stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have significantly raised their profiles and have started to make their way into Hollywood and into some pretty big films. Of course, this left many wondering when they would return to little ol’ Sherlock and when we would see a third season.
Today, Deadline is reporting that everything is in place and the camera is set to roll next week. The stars had an initial read through this week and next week filming will get underway. There isn’t anything official on a premiere date just yet but likely, we’ll be seeing the show in Winter 2013, in the UK at least.
Now, as those who watch the show know, each season is broken up into only three episodes. It may not seem like a lot but due to the increasingly busy schedules of Cumberbatch and Freeman, they can only film two episodes before they break for the Summer to go film The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Once they’ve completed that, they will head back to the UK to shoot episode three.
So, it looks like the wait for our favourite detective series will be a long one. I personally love Sherlock, and am very pleased to see that both Freeman and Cumberbatch are experiencing a rise in profile and fame due to the show. They are both deserving of it. As happy as I am to see them making their mark on Hollywood, it will be sad to see the series come to an end, as this is rumoured to be the last season.
Nevertheless, I eagerly await season three and can’t wait to see what the creators have in store for us.
