Sons Of Anarchy Review: “Crucifixed” (Season 5, Episode 10)

Following this week's episode of Sons of Anarchy, I was left with more of a feeling of uncertainty than usual. Each member of the main cast has gone down a path with an end point that neither we nor them will know until they reach it.

There’s no getting around the fact that Clay is a reprehensible human being, and one episode of him facing that fact isn’t about to change it, but I found it hard not to feel a little something for Clay in his closing scene with Gemma. One moment I was with Gemma, knowing how sick this must all be making her feel, and the next I was conflicted.

Clay may be a reprehensible human being, but “human being” is still a part of that and it’s never easy to wish harm on others, especially the psychological sort Gemma leaving him once more would inflict on him.

That being said, he’s about to be hurt in a big way with Otto’s testimony being thrown out. Jax is some solid proof of Clay’s involvement with the home invasions away from finally being able to give Clay what he deserves. But will the feds save the day a second time, outdoing the deus ex machina to end all deus ex machinas we saw in last season’s finale? Again, knowing Sutter, that option is undoubtedly on the table.

Back to the subject of Otto, you had a feeling he was about to do something drastic when he asked Tara to leave the room, but I had no idea just how far he would go to simultaneously hurt and help the club. So Sutter still knows how to surprise me. In a good way, that is. Good to know.

However, he also knows how to surprise (and confound) me in a negative way, like when Tara diddled herself to the smell of Luann’s perfume at the end of last week’s episode, or when she harshly woke up her own son for seemingly no reason at the start of this week’s. With her trajectory the past couple weeks, she looks set to take on the same role as Gemma has this season, also known as infuriating head-case.

She’s already picked up Gemma’s habit of getting stoned, or at least she looked and acted like it in her conversation with Jax at the end. It’s only a matter of time before she too is having sex with random men and ruining every last one of her relationships.

On the plus side, maybe this means Gemma’s in the clear and won’t be perpetually making herself look bad anymore, since Tara’s set to take her place. Knowing Sutter, though, I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen next. I don’t know if I truly care what does. I don’t know if I trust him to deliver a satisfying conclusion. I just don’t know.

Bits and Bobs:

  • Sons of Anarchy needs a speech therapist on set. Once every episode there’s at least a couple lines that I can’t make out. Usually they come from Chibs, but sometimes they come from others, such as Bobby.
  • Where is Tig, anyway? Did he go away somewhere and I forgot? It’s almost as if the show’s writing him out now to save themselves the time.
