Is it too much of a stretch to say that Star Trek just wouldn’t be the same without Mr. Spock?
Whether it’s Leonard Nimoy or Zachary Quinto in the role, everyone’s favorite Starfleet science officer brings a calm intelligence to the bridge, and just this week, it was revealed that Star Trek: Discovery had finally located its half-human, half-Vulcan after months of searching.
His name? Ethan Peck, who’s now joined the hit show to play the foster brother of Michael Burnham (The Walking Dead‘s Sonequa Martin-Green) in what’s shaping up to be a much lighter batch of episodes than the debut season. Yes, for those of you who felt that the rookie outing was a bit too dark, you’ll be happy to know that for round two, things will be changing significantly.
In fact, not only are we being promised a season full of lighter moments and more humor, but actor Shazad Latif recently told us that the next run will be “very much like old Trek.”
The first one was set in wartime and it was very dark, it had to be. My character was dealing with very deep issues and going through a lot of pain and struggle, which is very great for drama. I think this [season] is very much like the old Trek. It has got more lighter moments, which balance it out even more, which I think everyone is going to love.
That’s not all Latif had to say, though, as he also spilled on what lies ahead for his character Ash Tyler when Discovery returns.
Now that the secret is out, it’s more about the repercussions. It is more of a balancing act. He is stuck between Starfleet and the Klingons, and how you would handle that. And the fallout, who he has hurt, how he is going to repair stuff, the intimate relationships with L’Rell and Burnham. That’s enough for anyone.
Also starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs and Anthony Rapp, among others, season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery is expected to premiere via CBS All Access in January 2019, and only then will we be able to see how accurate Latif is in comparing the new run to the Trek of old.
