CBS All Access is fast becoming the home of Star Trek.
In tandem with Discovery season 2, the network is also dedicating resources to Star Trek: Short Treks, a series of four standalone short films set within the Trek universe.
The first, simply titled Runaway, stars Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman), who encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. To give audiences an idea of what to expect from the 10-minute shorts, CBS has today unveiled the first footage of Wiseman’s Trekkie in action – just in time for the October 4th premiere.
Like we mentioned before, this is the first of four Short Treks to come from CBS, with the overriding goal of delivering “closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes. They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”
It’s perhaps the perfect appetizer for next year’s installment of Star Trek: Discovery, after franchise architect Alex Kurtzman revealed that each new short film will include a number of clues for Michael Burnham’s next adventure.
Beyond Runaway‘s arrival next week, CBS has mapped out another three standalone adventures between now and January 3rd, the details of which can be found below.
Calypso, Thursday, Nov. 8: After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an AI computer interface.
The Brightest Star, Thursday, Dec. 6: Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.
The Escape Artist, Thursday, Jan. 3: Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship, just in time to try out his latest con.
CBS kicks off its Short Trek miniseries with Runaway on October 4th, before another three Star Trek shorts tumble off the production line in the coming months.
