Yesterday, we finally got a better picture of what this fall’s Arrowverse crossover will entail when it was confirmed the title will be “Elseworlds.” Serving as a nod to the line of DC books of the same name, classics such as Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Superman: Red Son and Kingdom Come immediately spring to mind as masterworks that served up unforgettable alternate takes on some of our favorite heroes.
As such, that forces us to think Ruby Rose’s Batwoman may not exist on any Earth we’ve visited thus far in any DC TV series. In fact, it dawned on me later in the day that the versions of Green Arrow, the Flash and Supergirl showing up in the crossover may not even be those we’ve come to know.
Speaking of which, someone over at Green Arrow TV had a similar revelation, voicing it on Twitter by saying: “Wondering if this year’s crossover being Elseworlds is a way to have Oliver Queen in the crossover while still possibly being in prison….”
Believe it or not, Stephen Amell himself went out of his way to respond with a shrugging emoji that can be viewed below, causing those sharing this school thought to feel that we may be onto something.
If indeed Amell, Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist and various others suit up as their respective doppelgangers, then it’d allow for the annual crossover to be a standalone event and not interfere with other ongoing storylines for the first time ever. Plus, that’d also mean Arrow‘s producers won’t have to rush what they’re doing just so Ollie can be out of prison.
Furthermore, the whole “Elseworlds” deal could simply solve its Batman problem by saying that the world on which this version of Kate Kane resides lacks a Bruce Wayne. If so, the producers needn’t come up with any sort of half-baked excuse for the Dark Knight’s absence – because he doesn’t exist.
Time will tell how this all plays out, but you can look forward to things kicking off on Sunday, December 9 with The Flash, continuing on Monday, December 10 with Arrow, and wrapping up on Tuesday, December 11 with Supergirl.
