It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Review: “Mac Day” (Season 9, Episode 5)

Finally after years of knowing Mac has a bit of an interest in dudes, the characters on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia address it. I wrote in one of my reviews last year that I wouldn't be surprised if we got an episode titled something along the lines of Mac Bangs A Dude and sure enough, we got just about the closest thing with this week's episode Mac Day. How is Mac Day close to him banging a dude? Well I'll just say at one point he greases up some beefcakes.

It’s always hilarious when Mac’s homosexual leanings come into play. The episodes where he was dating the Tranny were all great, as are the subtler jokes that are thrown in every few episodes. But tonight, instead of giving us a bunch of those jokes, we just hear them talk about the moments. We don’t spend time listening to Mac talk about gays, or even dudes for that matter, we just have the others mentioning it occurred and noting that Mac happened to have an erection at the time. Why not let us watch a trademark Mac speech where he bashes homosexuality in a way that shows he’s definitely for it? That would’ve been a much funnier option than just having to imagine those things ourselves.

I guess my main issue with this episode is how it falters in comparison with the hilarious episodes we’ve seen lately. So far this season has been full of great quips and sight gags that have had me chuckling to myself for hours after the episode. That just isn’t happening with this episode. There weren’t that many quality one-liners, and there certainly weren’t any moments that had me laughing out loud.

This is an uncomfortable review to write. It feels very awkward. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had to write a review for an episode of Sunny that was mostly negative, but unfortunately, that’s the case with this episode. That being said, the rest of the season has been great, so I have faith that next week will do something to completely redeem Mac Day.

Other Random Notes

  • The first time we met one of Mac’s cousins (The Gang Gets Racist) he was gay. Which means we’ve met two of Mac’s cousins, and they’re both gay. When does cousin three come along?
  • “You know what’s badass? Being alive.”
  • We need more cautious Mac. “There’s nothing badass about breaking the law.”
  • Seriously though, where did Country Mac get all those beers?

Be sure to check back next week for a review on the next episode of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
