Not much is yet known about the direction of CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series beyond the pilot episode (read our review here), but with its October premiere swiftly approaching, production on upcoming episodes is about to go into full swing. As such, more cast additions and story details are coming to light; during San Diego Comic-Con we learned that Maxwell Lord would have a recurring role in the series (played by Twilight alum Peter Facinelli), and now another DC Comics character has joined the fray.
According to TVLine, Lucy Lane – the sister of famous the Daily Planet’s famous Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Lois Lane – is coming to the series to create a bit of a love triangle, and may even show up as her own caped alter ego, Superwoman.
[zerg]Lucy is described as “as brash, funny and beautiful as her sister Lois.” However, she won’t just be fighting to stay out of her sister’s shadow, as she’ll be “strong, smart and successful in her own right.” She’ll also be the ex-girlfriend of James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), who recently transferred from the Daily Planet to CatCo, where Kara works. Kara and Jimmy strike up a bit of romantic tension in the pilot, so things are likely to get all the more complicated when Lucy comes into the picture during the show’s third episode.
Lucy will be a recurring character on the show, leaving the door wide open for her to adapt the Superwoman mantle at one point. In the comics, she was given a suit that simulated Kryptonian powers and was manipulated into villainy by her father, General Sam Lane. Her brief stint as Superwoman pits her against Supergirl, so their eventual confrontation on the series is certainly in the cards.
Of course, the Superwoman connection is only speculation (and a bit fan excitement), so we’ll see how that plays out. In the meantime, keep an eye on We Got This Covered as we’ll likely know the identity of the actress playing Lucy Lane in the coming weeks.
Supergirl will go up, up and away on CBS on October 26th, 2015.
