Supergirl’s Arrival On The CW Leads To Record Breaking Ratings For The Network

While Supergirl performed admirably on CBS, it never really lived up to the network's expectations (especially given how much they were apparently spending on it). The show's move to The CW made sense for a number of reasons, and while some perceived it as a risky move - there was after all nothing to say viewers would follow the series to its new home - it looks like the "gamble" has paid off for Supergirl as it scored record ratings last night.

The CW announced today that the season 2 premiere gave the network its most-watched (3.024 million) show in its Monday 8 – 9pm time period in almost eight years. It also scored their highest adults 18-34 (0.9/4) rating in five years. Both of these records broke those previously held by the extremely popular Gossip Girl.

There are lots of other pretty impressive statistics to mull over as well, but one of the most interesting has to be the fact that Supergirl was The CW’s highest rated show ever in its time period among men 18-49 (1.2/4). That instantly rubbishes any possible claims that the show only did well because of the network’s large female audience and proves that the fanbase for the Girl of Steel is significant.

The presence of Superman no doubt helped the show’s return, but the power of the titular character definitely shouldn’t be underestimated. It’s going to be interesting to see how it does from here, but for now, it’s fair to say that Supergirl on The CW is a hit. Assuming things remain this way, expect her to receive a third season, too.
