Surprisingly steamy ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ trailer offers first look at a canon-breaking crossover

But who cares about canon, right?

In just a few short weeks, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will warp back onto our screens for what looks to be a spectacular sophomore run that could well even surpass the show’s brilliant debut season in 2022. Perhaps the biggest treat the new episodes will offer is a fully-fledged crossover between the pre-Kirk crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the characters of Star Trek: Lower Decks.

That’s despite this making zero sense, given that Lower Decks takes place after the events of The Next Generation while SNW is set before The Original Series. Not to mention that one show is live-action and the other is animation. Nevertheless, for once, the usually meticulous Star Trek fanbase couldn’t care less about canon as this crossover just looks too fun to miss out on.

Don’t believe me? Check out the second trailer for season two above, which offers our first look at Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome in the flesh as their LD characters, Ensign Beckett Mariner and Ensign Bradward Boimler.

In addition, Paramount Plus released the above still showing off the duo. Naturally, the pair have embodied their characters as perfectly in live-action as they do through their voices. The translation of the LD uniforms is spot-on, and Mariner still rolling up her sleeves is a nice touch. Plus, kudos to Quaid — not many people can pull off a purple hairdo.

Elsewhere in the thrilling trailer, Spock looks to be getting hot under the collar as his romance with Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) heats up. There’s also more from Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk and a glimpse at Carol Kane as new character Engineer Pelia. Like Anson Mount’s Captain Christopher Pike tells us, hold onto your saddles ’cause Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns to Paramount Plus on June 16.
