We’re fast approaching the scariest day of the year, so it’s the perfect time to bring Wednesday back into the conversation, (although for some she never left). She’s the patron saint of all things spooky, so who else could you realistically choose to dress up as on October 31st? Okay so Barbie is definitely an option but Wednesday is the Halloween queen so here are some of the best costume ideas for this spooky season.
The original
The original Wednesday look is by far the most simple to pull off as well as being the most recognizable look for the character. Made popular by the 1964 sitcom adaptation of The Addams Family, this version of Wednesday had a look almost identical to Charles Addams’ original cartoon version.
Her iconic braided pigtails, black dress and black tights have been a staple of her character for decades now. All you need to do to steal her look is get your hands on a plain black dress, a white blouse with a collar to wear underneath, and some black tights and T bar school shoes. All of these items should be pretty simple to get your hands on, in fact, you can find them all on Amazon. Even better, this dress comes with the white collar sewn in from the get-go.
Christina Ricci version
Very few changes were made to the costume when it came time for Christina Ricci to inherit the spirit of Wednesday. However, her dress does have small white flowers patterned all over it that contrast with the darkness of the dress. If you want to specifically dress up as the Christina Ricci version of the character then all you need to do is swap out the plain black dress for one with white dots or flowers. You can find such dresses online, again, Amazon is an easy place to find such clothes.
Wednesday’s Nevermore uniform
This is the costume that Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday wore for most of the Netflix show. It’s different from the classic look but still just as recognizable with its black stripes going down the blazer and the long skirt. Coupled with the braided pigtails and a white blouse with a collar underneath and you’ll truly embody the spirit of Wednesday Addams.
The most difficult part about this costume will be finding the Nevermore school uniform complete with the school crest embroidered on the blazer. You can buy the outfit from Hot Topic, but don’t forget to complete the look with an umbrella and some dark lipstick.
The Rave’N Dance dress
I’ve used the word ‘iconic’ to describe Wednesday’s look a few times so far, but I really mean it this time. This dress and the scene that accompanies it really resonated with fans of the show last year. The Wednesday dance was and still is one of the biggest trends and in part, the amazing-looking dress had a huge part in making it so memorable. It’s a cool gothic look with the tulle lace net fabric making the dress stand out even more.
Obviously, any old black dress won’t do for this look. Luckily there are plenty of costume versions of the dress available online, Amazon has a great deal to choose from and they look very similar to the real deal complete with the black mesh and belt.
The Rave’N Dance dress bloody variation
So the Rave’N Dance dress is good, but it can be better, that is if you’d prefer to go with something a little different and much more horrific. If you remember how the dance scene ends in the show then you’ll know that everybody on the floor ends up showered in ‘blood’ which is quickly revealed to be red paint. Still, the image of Wednesday in the dress covered in what looks like blood is quite the striking image, so why not make that your look for Halloween this year?
If you’ve already bought the dress and you don’t mind it being ruined then all you’d need for this is some fake blood to pour over yourself. You’ll need quite a lot though but luckily you can purchase decent-sized bottles from Amazon, but it might just be easier and cheaper to look up how to create your own fake blood at home.
Goody Addams
A great ancestor to Wednesday, Goody Addams pulls off the gothic look without the need for black. Her ghostly appearance comes down to her 17th-century clothing, a corset and a long dress which can be bought from costume sites like Sky Costume. This is a pretty good choice for costume for people who want to go with something that’s a little more unique, whilst this isn’t technically Wednesday, Goody is still played by Jenna Ortega, so it definitely counts.
