I seriously doubt that I was the only one floored by the myriad of fan service in last night’s episode of Gotham. If the trailer embedded at the top represents even a fraction of how exciting next week’s season finale looks to be, we should be in for some fine television.
What made me – and possibly many other viewers – spike our remote controls like footballs in jubilation last night was the long rumored appearance of the Court of Owls. Emerging from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman: The Court of Owls, one of the most definitive comic book story arcs to feature the Dark Knight in our current decade, the shadowy group is made up of Gotham City’s high society elite and have secretly charted the course of the city for centuries.
[zergpaid]As we look back on the past season, it’s hard to deny that the puzzle pieces fit quite naturally. The fact that Hugo Strange hired Matches Malone to murder Thomas and Martha Wayne at the behest of a secret society adds a new measure of depth to Batman lore. Not only that, but Strange’s efforts to resurrect the dead line up with what can be found in the comics as the Court employs undead assassins known as Talons to do their dirty work. Call me crazy, but I found Fish Mooney’s new costume to be highly reminiscent of what Talons normally wear. Although that may not be where they go with her character, you have to admit these events are playing out a bit conveniently.
