Streaming has proven itself to be a crueler mistress than usual recently, with virtually every major platform wielding the axe in an effort to cut costs, but the fate of Star Trek: Prodigy has proven to be one of the sorest yet.
For one thing, Paramount Plus had proudly designated itself as the home of all things Star Trek, only to cancel the animated spin-off series less than six months after it aired its last episode. Not only that, but the offshoot of the legendary franchise will be getting removed from the content library entirely, meaning that it may not be available to watch anywhere ever again unless a savior steps in.
What makes it exponentially worse is that Prodigy had already been renewed for a second run all the way back in November of 2021, with the creative team diligently working on another 20 installments in the time since. In an effort to ensure that all that hard work isn’t for nothing, executive producer Aaron J. Waltke has outlined the terms and conditions of the inevitable campaign.
Ditching a renewed series that’s edging towards having its sophomore season completed and ready to go is harsh to put it lightly, but it may yet end up working in the favor of Star Trek: Prodigy. After all, anybody who steps up to the plate and takes a chance on the show is going to have 20 episodes of exclusive content that can’t be found anywhere else, which just so happens to be set in one of the most enduringly popular mythologies in the history of science fiction.
