With its arrival on the streaming service just over two weeks away, Netflix’s promotion for The Crown season 2 is in full swing. Following on from the full-length trailer that dropped earlier this month, we’re now getting smaller teasers that hint at each of the major characters’ storylines. Last week it was Margaret’s turn, and this week, we’ve got a trailer dedicated to Matt Smith’s Prince Phillip.
The footage reveals that we’ll see Phillip’s childhood during World War II explored in the new season. Meanwhile, in the present day of the series, his marriage to Elizabeth will continue to be strained under the weight of the monarchy and Phillip’s urge to stretch his wings. However, it also makes clear the deep affection between the pair, with Phillip proclaiming that he knows his wife more than he knows himself.
The Royal family drama was a hit when the first season aired last December, with the intelligent writing and outstanding performances from the leads being praised for humanizing Queen Elizabeth II and her family. Thankfully, it looks like that high quality has been retained for its sophomore run. WGTC’s own Joseph Falcone rated it quite well in his review, too, describing it as “scandalous, seductive and stately” and promising that “it will have viewers begging for a third helping.”
And a third helping is definitely on the way. The only thing is that the following season will see a massive shake-up of the cast. As The Crown moves forward through the decades, Claire Foy and Matt Smith are set to be replaced as Elizabeth and Phillip for more age-appropriate actors.
The only news we’ve had on this so far is that Foy will be replaced with Murder on the Orient Express‘ Olivia Colman. The next Phillip has yet to be found – though Colman has said she hopes it might be her former Broadchurch co-star David Tennant. Which would no doubt delight Doctor Who fans.
Be sure to catch The Crown season 2 when it hits Netflix next month.
