The Vampire Diaries Review: “Fifty Shades Of Grayson” (Season 5, Episode 10)

In case you haven't picked up on any of The Vampire Diaries subtle hints over the past 5 seasons, this episode reiterates that there is a definite reason why Damon (Ian Somerhalder) doesn't have many (read: any) friends. As charming as he can be when the situation calls for it, he can't escape from his propensity for pushing the people closest to him away. And up at bat this week - Elena (Nina Dobrev).

In the past, it’s always been easy to look at Katherine as expendable. That’s why it was so easy for everyone and anyone to let her walk into situations in Elena’s place. If she had become collateral damage of any of the previous villains on The Vampire Diaries, it would have been an acceptable loss – who am I kidding, it would have been a welcomed loss. It’s not like Katherine has exactly proved herself in the loved one’s department over the last 538 years.

Despite that, her long lost daughter is adamant about finding a way around her pending death – which may be coming sooner than later if the heart attack symptoms followed by the fall down the stairs was any indication. In a bizarre twist of events, she may not be the only person that would shed a tear if Katherine did finally meet her maker. Stefan hasn’t completely given up hating her, but it would definitely appear that he’s considering the option. At least it’s pretty obvious that his intense feelings on the matter have dulled since she offered some vulnerability to the table.

I can’t get over how convenient it would be for everyone if Stefan found love again, in Katherine of all people, and Damon was left alone to cherish Elena without the distraction of betraying his brother constantly hovering in his thoughts. It’s a little twisted given the family connections, and the fact that they’ve pretty much all slept with each other, but it would solve a couple problems (no pun intended).

Unfortunately, knowing Katherine’s history and tenacity for surviving against the odds, she will probably take her current state of health as one last opportunity to screw everyone else over. That means that she’s going to go through with the Traveller spell that Nadia suggested and since her body will be dead, she’ll hop right over to Elena’s. She can take over her body right along with her life, and have everything she has always wanted.
