The Vampire Diaries Review: “Gone Girl” (Season 5, Episode 15)

The Vampire Diaries didn't make us wait long to see how the whole expelling Katherine (Nina Dobrev) from Elena's (also Dobrev) body scenario would play out, but that doesn't mean fans got everything they wanted out of it. Even though Dobrev is back to finally being a solo-act, her single remaining character isn't going to be herself for a while. In a desperate final act, Katherine made a play to ensure that the love of her life would remain out of reach for Elena, and anyone else who may think about batting their eyelashes his way.

None of Elena’s closest friends noticed that she had been replaced. Least of all, Bonnie (Kat Graham). This is an interesting conundrum since she is the anchor and Katherine would have had to pass through her to get to the other side. She only saw Katherine for a moment before she disappeared, definitely not undertaking the task of a painful transition. If anyone missed an obvious sign, it was her.

For some time now, we’ve been led to believe that all supernatural beings went to the ambiguous “other side.” Point blank. The fact that Katherine never made it there and was instead extradited to parts unknown puts a hole in The Vampire Diaries mythology. Whether or not she ultimately deserved to be there more than any other stunningly vengeful vampire is open to debate. Deciding to inject herself with Dr. Wes’s (Rick Cosnett) serum in order to punish Elena didn’t help her cause. At least there’s a possibility that she will be in good company.

It’s almost a poetic twist to the story that both Elena and Damon have found themselves in an altered state of what it generally means to be a vampire. They’re in love, after all. This is just another thing that down the road they’ll be able to look back at and laugh, because in the end it will only strengthen their relationship, right? If anything, what Elena will inevitably do in the upcoming episodes of The Vampire Diaries will counter-balance Damon’s fall off the wagon.

Katherine is dead. Nadia is dead. Dr. Wes is dead. Damon and Elena have been transformed into unfortunate versions of their former selves. Do you think that there is a cure out there, or has Damon screwed them both over with his recent transgression? Let us know all your theories on The Vampire Diaries in the comment section below!
