The Vampire Diaries Review: “No Exit” (Season 5, Episode 14)

The Vampire Diaries has transformed the only vampire we love to hate (and love) more than Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) into a vampire that simply put, can't be trusted. You may be trying to figure out how this is a new twist when it comes to Damon (Ian Somerhalder). The truth being that he completely possessed this fun little trait way before being injected with Dr. Wes's ripper serum, but at least then he was in control of his behavior - whichever direction it leaned. Take away the element of control and you open Damon up to entire world of regrettable decisions that fall into the forgivable category. New territory for Mystic Falls' resident bad boy - and a worthy reason as any for Stefan (Paul Wesley) to swoop in on his white horse and save the day.

In hindsight, Katherine may find that it was her over-eagerness that was the final piece in the puzzle that Elena’s friends were scratching their heads trying to solve. There was something off about Elena for a while but until now, Katherine had put on a pretty good act. Where she messed up was in her lack of resolve. Instead of looking at the end game like Elena would have, as a marathon not a sprint, she rushed into making a move. Understandable for a woman who has been waiting for this shot at a fresh start for the last 500 years, right?

Unfortunately, she failed to take into account how her conspicuous actions would resonate with Elena’s closest friends. Is it possible that down the line Elena would have ended up back with Stefan if she and Damon didn’t work out? Sure. It’s not that farfetched of a notion. Universe and doppelganger nature at work and all. But Elena always puts the people she cares about before herself, and Elena cares about Damon. Ergo, she would never have hopped from one brother to the other like that. For someone who has survived all these years by being on top of the details, Katherine is striking out pretty fast. And she’s not the only one.

The awkward moment where Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) reunite over a common cause has arrived ahead of schedule, saving Matt (Zach Roerig) from whatever plot Nadia (Olga Fonda) had in store was worthy of a phone call. But, it didn’t warrant a long conversation once things started to not add up. Tyler is so unsettled by Caroline’s (highly anticipated) hook up with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) that he won’t take a step back and look at his own recent actions. Caroline may have slept with Klaus, but Tyler was willing to leave her behind, potentially forever, over his own sense of revenge. Klaus has proven more than once that he’s willing to go the distance for Caroline, so why doesn’t Tyler see the merit in that?

This (former) lover’s quarrel is going to have to take a back seat for a bit since it doesn’t have anything over the final scene of tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries. Caroline and Stefan put all the pieces together and then proceed to stare at each other dumbfounded. They may have been a little slow on the uptake, but at least they figured it out sooner than later: Katherine is parading around as Elena. Now the question is, what are they going to do about it?

What do you think is going to happen next on The Vampire Diaries now that Katherine’s secret is out of the bag. Will this be it for Katherine Pierce? Sound off below!
