The Vampire Diaries Review: “Down The Rabbit Hole” (Season 4, Episode 14)

Down the rabbit hole we go, and with us most of the cast of The Vampire Diaries - or so it appears. Fans of The Vampire Diaries might have gotten more than they expected with this episode and left them as lost as they've ever been.

It’s hard to tell whether Jeremy is really dead or if his current supernatural hunter title earns him a free pass given the cause of his death. We know that hunters can be killed, but there surely is some built in safeguard to protect them from dying in the line of duty like this. And, since Jeremy is now a supernatural of sorts, his no-die ring will probably not be any help this time around.

With Tyler (Michael Trevino) in the wind after Caroline successfully convinced Klaus to show minimal mercy on him, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) looking down for the count after being stabbed by Vaughn (Charlie Bewley), it seems unlikely that this is the last we’ve seen of Jeremy. At the very least, losing half of your main characters all in one episode is a waste for a show that survives on unexpected losses and it’s best to spread those out.

Either way, the losses are stacking up and that leaves everyone in a fragile, emotional state. Caroline is stuck between her love for Tyler and her compassion for Klaus that no matter what he does, she can’t seem to lose. With Tyler out of the way, maybe Klaus will finally have the sense to find some remnants of his own humanity and try to make it up to Caroline. His self destructive nature keeps him from making the right decision 99 out of 100 times but I think everyone deserves a bit of a reprieve while Jeremy recovers, for lack of a better word.

Previews for episode 15 ‘Stand By Me’ make it look like Bonnie makes it out of this incident unscathed, yet I have my doubts. If she was still alive then why would Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), and Rebekah (Claire Holt) leave her on the island with Professor Shane (David Alpay)? Especially with the threat of an awakened Silas lurking around. It seems unlikely at best. Even in Elena’s grieving state, she would never entertain the idea of leaving her best friend deserted on an isolated island. Of course, in the heat of the chaos that might unfold, Bonnie may have been slipped out of the cave unnoticed. It seems far-fetched, but at this point it’s anyone’s guess how things will go once ‘the ultimate evil’ guy gets up from his nap. Or, how Klaus will take it no longer being the biggest bad ass around.

The Vampire Diaries without its resident werewolf? Katherine with a new master plan? Elena losing, even temporarily, another loved one?
