By all accounts, AMC and the creative team behind The Walking Dead gave Rick Grimes the send-off he deserved during season 9 but, er, what comes after?
Turns out a whole trilogy of movies for Andrew Lincoln’s grizzled survivor, though it’ll be some time yet before AMC is ready to divulge any finer details about Rick’s next steps. For instance, over on the weekly rendition of the Skybound mailbag (h/t ComicBook.com), one curious Walking Dead fan put the question to AMC: Are the planned Rick Grimes feature films exclusive to television? Or will they air in theaters as part of a one-off special?
Here’s the official response:
There are a lot of details that still have to be sorted out for the Rick Grimes movies, but for now, the plan is to air the films on AMC.
It seems it’s not outside the realm of possibility, then, but we should warn you: AMC is yet to nail down the finer details of Rick’s Walking Dead spinoff movies, so perhaps we shouldn’t read too much into this non-statement at this stage of the game.
Closer to home, we now have a better understanding of how The Walking Dead season 9B kicks off, thanks to showrunner Angela Kang. When quizzed by EW about the transition period between 2018 and 2019, Kang confirmed that viewers will be dragged straight into the thick of it, beginning with the burial of Jesus.
It’s gonna be a direct pickup. We’re gonna find out what happens to that group that was in the cemetery as they try to make their harrowing journey back home to bury Jesus.
And it all kicks off in February, when The Walking Dead season 9 resumes. Beyond that, a 10th season has already been confirmed, while there have been rumblings that the first Rick Grimes spinoff movie ought to be with us next year, too.
