Walkers in winter?
It’s not as crazy as it sounds, as The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero recently weighed in with his thoughts on a potential spinoff series which forces its lead characters to battle the elements and biting temperatures, all the while contending with the dead.
Coated in a thick blanket of snow, this icy offshoot would nudge The Walking Dead toward uncharted territory, and we know frozen zombies have already featured in the likes of Resident Evil: Retribution and the Dead Snow series.
Here’s Greg Nicotero making his case for a cold-weather spinoff:
The one thing that the comic book does great [is] when they introduce the cold weather and the winter. I had even written some webisodes that took place with a frozen zombie herd. And I think that our hopes are — my hopes — would be that we would get into an entirely different location, like a cold weather scenario. Because frozen zombies are f–ing awesome. Until they thaw out and then you’re screwed. Because they would freeze and thaw out, and they would be fine.
As for why AMC is yet to dabble in a frozen zombie series, we imagine it comes down to logistics. Capturing The Walking Dead (and Fear!) is difficult enough as it is before you toss in sub-zero temperatures and hazardous conditions. Even still, it would certainly give TWD the boost it so desperately needs – ditto for a potential movie to overseas territory.
Nicotero continued:
We’ve done a good job of allowing our audience to populate the US and I think there’s a lot more opportunities outside of the US for a zombie show.
Back in the realm of reality, The Walking Dead season 8 is fast approaching its blockbuster finale, which is expected to leave the door open for the fourth season of Fear The Walking Dead – and Morgan Jones, in particular – when all is said and done.
