While fans of DC Comics properties are certainly enjoying an embarrassment of riches when it comes to seeing their favorite heroes dominate the small screen, sometimes disappointment abounds. We now have word that TNT has chosen not to move forward with the live action Titans TV series. As unfortunate as the news is, it should not come as too much of a shock since it has been nearly a year since any real news has been reported regarding the ill fated series.
It seemed the network was originally enthused about proceeding with the show’s development when TNT president Kevin Reilly told TV Line the following last May:
“I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering. I think it’s going to be excellent.”
More recently, Reilly said these heartbreaking words at TCA:
“We decided it wasn’t where we wanted to go.”
Had the series come to fruition, it would have been overseen by Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever, Batman and Robin) and Marc Haimes (Men in Black II, Legend of Zorro) and centered on Dick Grayson making the leap from Robin to Nightwing, a story arc that many comic book fans would no doubt have loved to see play out in live action. Other characters that would have been included were Starfire, Raven, Barbara Gordon/Oracle, Hawk, and Dove.
Despite consisting of characters both familiar and unfamiliar to classic Teen Titans lineups, the show sounded like it would have taken some inspiration from the classic comic book series New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Not only that, but a Dick Grayson/Starfire/Barbara Gordon love triangle would have been a near certainty, providing for drama that TNT seemingly would have backed.
There is, however, a silver lining to this: Dick Grayson can now be used as either Robin or Nightwing on existing DC TV shows, provided that it doesn’t conflict with what WB’s motion picture division has planned. The same applies to Barbara Gordon, who could also be used as either Oracle or Batgirl.
