During last night’s MTV Movie Awards, viewers were granted a first look at the network’s upcoming reboot series, Scream, in the shape of three trailers. Based on the 1996 Wes Craven movie which rewrote the rules of horror and handed them back covered in blood and nods to a tired, all-knowing audience, MTV’s small screen take appears to be a somewhat less pioneering affair.
Craven is back to executive produce along with Scream producers Cathy Konrad and Marianne Magdalena. For this hip, happening remodel, the directorial duties go to Jamie Travis who, along with a bunch of new writers, carves a new story that’s anchored in the origins of the first Scream movie.
How they’re linked in terms of connective story tissue is left uncertain, but one thing is abundantly clear: the meta theme is still going strong. Off the bat a self-assured kid leads the voiceover with this astute observation – “you can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series.” Is that a challenge to the showrunners to perhaps outdo the entire cinematic franchise?
In its attempt to put a ‘fresh spin’ on the well-known Scream premise, there are a few tasty twists. Namely, Ghostface’s mask has undergone a makeover which harks back to earlier word suggesting it would pertain to a darker, more organic feel. And, it seems that one of the masked killer’s most endearing attributes – his incessant chattiness – has been forgotten. Could we be facing a silent slayer? We’ll find out what lies in store for the beautiful teens this summer. For now, check out the new trailer above and a couple of short TV spots below, and be sure to let us know what you think of this new modern direction for the meta-slasher.
Starring Bella Thorne, Jason Wiles, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Willa Fitzgerald and Jason Wiles, Scream premieres on June 30th.
Everyone has secrets. Everyone tells lies. Everyone is fair game. The new series is based on the Dimension feature of the same name. The series kicks off after a cyber-bullying incident results in a brutal murder, with the shocking violence stirring up memories of a killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killer. It centers on a group of new teens — with two old friends struggling to reconnect at its heart — who become lovers, enemies, suspects, targets and victims of a killer who’s out for blood.
