Last week on The Vampire Diaries, Esther (Alice Evans) dropped a bomb on us when she revealed that she had hijacked her daughter’s body in order to carry out her plans to eliminate vampires from the world by killing her four remaining children.
The uneasy alliance of Rebekah (Claire Holt)/Esther and Alaric’s (Matt Davis) vampire hating alter ego means that no one is safe in Mystic Falls. If there’s anything that the residents are guilty of, it’s their lenient tendency toward the walking dead. This is surely not something that evil-Alaric hasn’t noticed. Before the plan goes any further Esther is ready to reclaim her own body, leaving Rebekah free to make her way to the decade dance.
Caroline (Candice Accola) takes over at the dance committee with Rebekah still temporarily unavailable and recruits Elena (Nina Dobrev), Matt (Zach Roerig), and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to help. This gives Caroline plenty of time to convince Elena to ask Stefan (Paul Wesley) to come as her date. She gives in and makes the call. It looks like round 2 of “who will Elena pick?” is going strong, much to Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) dismay.
Things get all sorts of witchy when Esther borrows Alaric’s magic “do not die” ring to make the white oak stake indestructible.
The 20’s is a good look for the former couple. Elena and Stefan head to the dance all decked out. I can say one thing, Mystic Falls High can sure throw a good theme party.
A competetive Tyler (Michael Trevino) shows up to fight for his gal against any romantic threat that Klaus (Joseph Morgan) might pose.
This dance is definitely in the same style as the ones that didn’t work out so well for the gang in the past. Damon shows up to inform the others that Alaric is off the side of good. Esther comes calling on Elena and the Salvatore brothers are trapped in by a spell which leaves Elena without her usual back-up.
Meanwhile, Bonnie (Kat Graham) tries to get back to normal and brings Jamie (Robert Ri’Chard) to the dance. Everything is going great for about 17 seconds when the vamps need a witch to work some magic and kill the spell keeping them trapped. Klaus is the least patient of all, especially after his attempts to woo Caroline go more unrequited than usual.
Esther’s new plan is to turn Alaric into some ultimate vampire hunter guy and so far it looks to be going her way. Alaric is on-board and ready to become a different kind of immortal. All Elena’s pleading can’t put Ric back together again. His “original” self does make an appearance in time to save both Jeremy and Matt, and kill Esther – or so we can only hope.
It’s strange the relationship that has developed between Stefan and Klaus. Despite the odds, I could completely picture them as allies. And he might need one after Alaric decides not to complete the transition. I did not see this coming. Who will Damon call his friend now?
Everything looked like it was all going to wrap itself up in a nice bow but even in death Esther has other plans.
Will an alliance between the vampires be enough to defeat Alaric? Is there any chance of saving him now?
