Having been the mind behind a handful of some of the most spectacular movies in the 21st century so far, Guillermo del Toro is one of the most recognizable Hollywood personalities who spends little time in front of the camera, but is more often than not behind it. Either that, or in the writer’s room.
However, del Toro has never shied away from making cameos and special appearances in projects he is fond of, usually for folks he has befriended throughout his storied career. He’s shown up in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia after a collaboration with Charlie Day on Pacific Rim, and offered up his likeness (but not his voice) for the character of Deadman in Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, after their ill-fated Silent Hills project fell through at Konami.
Now, del Toro has made another cameo appearance for a long-time friend – in none other than HBO’s Barry, which stars, is written by, and often directed by Bill Hader. When the show’s fourth season premiered, Hader teased that there would be a Guillermo del Toro appearance in the third episode, and went into detail about how he scored the acclaimed director’s time. Now that the third episode has come and gone, we’ve been introduced to his character – so who is he exactly?
Guillermo del Toro’s character in Barry
Guillermo del Toro, who brought his own cane to set for the purposes of bringing life to his character, aptly played the role of a crime boss named Toro. The director shares a brief scene with Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Cristobal (Michael Irby) following a delivery of sand. The three share details about who is planning to kill Barry and how, following up with a humorous exchange about podcasts and TikToks, and the cons of the former format.
Quite recently, del Toro scored himself the Oscar for Best Animated Feature for 2023 for his efforts directing last year’s stop motion film Pinocchio. Per the writer and director’s IMDb profile, del Toro is currently working on a screenplay for a Frankenstein film.
