Warning: this article contains spoilers for episodes one and two of Secret Invasion.
With two episodes of Secret Invasion now out on Disney Plus, viewers of the gritty Marvel spy show will have spotted numerous characters that they already know and love, like Nick Fury and Talos. With that said, avid watchers would have also noticed a whole host of new characters, or ones that don’t quite have the same screen history as the members of the Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy. This is especially true of the Skrulls, a group of shapeshifting aliens who are both the main antagonists in Secret Invasion (as they’re trying to enact a hostile takeover of Earth), as well as some of Nick Fury’s most important allies, like the aforementioned Talos.
One such character is Kreega, a Skrull who appeared very briefly in the first episode but is almost certain to have a big part to play in the future of the show. If you want to know more about this shapeshifting alien and what makes them tick, read below to discover who Kreega in Secret Invasion is, what happened to them in the comics, and what part they might play in the show!
Who is Kreega in Secret Invasion?
In Secret Invasion, Kreega is a Skrull who briefly appears next to Gravik, the leader of the army of Skrulls who wants to infiltrate Earth. We see the character during the introductory scene where the shapeshifting race of aliens begins to change, and although they only appear briefly, their placement next to the antagonist of the main series is surely a sign that we’ll be seeing more of them.
In the comics, Kreega is a “Super Skrull,” which means that they have extra superpowers in addition to the shapeshifting ability the Skrull race is known for. These powers are usually genetically grafted onto them, and while it hasn’t been confirmed in the series, in the comics, Kreega is known for having all the powers of the Fantastic Four, as well as the usual range of shapeshifting Skrull abilities.
Which actor is Kreega played by?
Kreega is played by Irmena Chichikova, a Bulgarian actress who hasn’t had many credits in Western films, but has a long and successful history as a theater, film, and television actress in her native land and other Eastern European countries. She also starred in Viktoria, which received plenty of critical acclaim at Sundance. This is her first major role in an English-speaking production.
Have we seen Kreega before in the MCU?
Despite the fact that the Skrulls are one of the most important alien species in the Marvel Universe, we haven’t seen too much of them in the MCU. This extends to Kreega, who has not made an appearance in the MCU yet. However, in Marvel comics, Skrulls have been around since Fantastic Four #2, which was released over six decades ago.
With that said, Kreega’s first appearance in the comics was only in 2002, when they took on a male form versus the female form that we see in Secret Invasion. In that comic (Marvel Mangaverse #2), Kreega was the leader of the Lava Men and lived on the surface of the planet Galactus. He discovered that a group of Inhumans were rallying around Marvin Ellwood and decided to use his forces to attack the son of the famous superhero, but, in Marvel Mangaverse #3, was defeated and thrown into the planet’s core, killing him.
Kreega is one of many characters that’s been gender-swapped in the MCU, although given that they are a shapeshifter, there isn’t that much to read into this particular facet of their character.
What role will Kreega play in the future of Secret Invasion?
The short answer is that we don’t really know what part Kreega will play in the future of Secret Invasion, because in customary MCU fashion, every person involved in the series has been tight-lipped about plotlines and character development. However, given their proximity to Gravik in the opening scene, and the fact that the character seems set to appear in the next episode, we can assume that Kreega will be involved in some plot points in the series, even if they’re not the main antagonist in Secret Invasion.
