The final episode of Max’s unlikely rom-com phenom Our Flag Means Death is just around the corner, but fans are already yearning for a third season. It’s not every day that a series captures comedy, adventure, and romance, and even rare still when it bundles it into one corsair-laden, LGBTQIA+ friendly adventure that just won’t quit. The theatrical retelling of Stede Bonnet‘s journey from aristocrat to “Gentleman Pirate” has critics and audiences alike desperate for more, but as of now HBO has decided to cancel the series, those scallywags!
Will there be a season 3 of Our Flag Means Death?
Despite show creator Dave Jenkins completing a road map for season 3 on Instagram in mid 2023, HBO decided to cancel the series unceremoniously in early 2024. The company cited poor viewership numbers as the reason for cancellation, though the series had promising forecasts. The first season was lauded as one of HBO’s top comedic series, and both seasons hold a solid 90% plus on Rotten Tomatoes
It’s not the first time Max attacked the show’s budget. After season 1 failed to drum up the viewership numbers the streaming giant was hoping for, Our Flag Means Death was forced to move from L.A. back to Taika Waititi’s home country of New Zealand. Despite the crew’s best attempts to but costs and drum up more fan fervor, it seems it wasn’t quite enough. At least the budget cuts weren’t. Fans of the series have been sounding alarms and waving flaps of protest ever since the news broke in early January.
As of now, HBO has given the series the go-ahead to move to another platform. Though the streaming giant can’t seem to find the budget to continue the series, it has no problem with allowing the property to find purchase somewhere else.
The release date and content of season three may be a mystery to viewers but the lives of Bonnet (Rhys Darby), Blackbeard (Taika Waitaki), and the oodles of pirate royalty the series touted in its second season are far from. It’s easy to peek at the real-life inspiration behind the series, but without the comedic highs and the dramatic lows Our Flag Means Death so expertly navigates, is it even worth reading?
What is Our Flag Means Death season 3 release date?
Even if Max refuses to let season 3 set sail, we know that a number of cast members are happy to return to the high seas whenever the time is right. Nathaniel Buttons (Ewen Brenner), Izzy Hands (Con O’Neill), Frenchie (Joel Fry), Wee John Feeney (Kristian Narin), Oluwande Boodhari (Samson Kayo), Jim Jimenez (Vico Ortiz), Black Pete (Matthew Maher), The Swede (Nat Faxon), and Admiral Chauncey Badminton (Rory Kinnear) have all expressed interest in returning.
Hopefully, the series will follow in Warrior Nun’s footsteps and find a new avenue forward. In order for that to happen, it will take some serious work from the dedicated fans. Not to worry, the voyage to renewal is well underway. Renewasacrew.com started fighting for season 2 back in August of 2023, and the site has already mobilized to fight for the crew of the Queen Anne’s Revenge to get a season 3.
