'Black Mirror' has returned to Netflix for a sixth season, but the disturbing show can't quite knock a teen drama off top spot.

Black Mirror has been one of the most interesting series to grace television in the last decade. Working as an anthology of individual and unique stories for each episode, the series looks at some rather disturbing futures we could find ourselves in if we let our consumption of technology run unchecked. Despite its lasting popularity, the sixth season has found itself somewhat overshadowed by the final season of Never Have I Ever.

Despite having another season packed to the brim with big named stars such as Salma Hayak, Ben Barnes, Himesh Patel, Annie Murphy, and Michael Cera (that’s just the first episode), as well as fantastic reviews, the sixth season of Black Mirror is still falling behind the teen drama on Netflix’s Top Ten Charts. The final season of Mindy Kaling’s comedy-drama has been watched with a total of 11.5 million views and takes the top spot on the chart, Black Mirror is just behind sitting in second place with 11.3 million views.

Created by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror started off on the British television channel, Channel 4 before moving to Netflix in 2016. The show has featured a number of prominent stars some of whom you may have even forgotten were in an episode. Bryce Dallas-Howard starred in an episode that China saw and thought, “That’s what we want,” where currying online social likes depicted how well off you were and what privileges you could access. Other actors that have starred in the series include Jesse Plemons, Michaela Coel, Anthony Mackie, Jon Hamm, Letitia Wright, Rory Kinnear, and Daniel Kaluuya.

Many of the episodes revolved around the theme of technology, social consciousness, and social media and how humans have come to live and rely on technology. However, The sixth season was a bit of a change for Brooker, who decided to shake things up a bit to stop the show from feeling formulaic. This season focuses more on elements of horror with one episode, titled Demon 79, having nothing to do with technology and is actually set in the past rather than the future.

The final season of Never Have I Ever focuses on how the main character, Devi navigates applying to college, and seeing how far she has come emotionally and mentally since we first met her back in 2020. The show has been praised for its South Asian representation in Hollywood and its shattering of stereotypes. The series has been an extremely popular one for Netflix and fans have been desperate to see how it ends.

Seeing as how sometimes it feels like we are already living in a technological dystopia written by Brooker himself, it may be that people want something light and entertaining rather than a reminder that humans are doomed to fall prey to the perils of modern technology.
